CHAPTER 28

AMANDA

Thursday

The mind is a clever and fascinating tool; it often gets stuck in a moment, usually somewhere deep in the past. The brain could quite simply press pause like a TV remote control and stand very still, caught in a certain frame, usually just before or around the time of a shit storm.

My mind felt paused on a time when Ben’s best friend still loved me, kept me safe and connected to my brother, regaling me with stories of the brother I could never have known. Through Dominic, I got to know a side of Ben that he had managed to keep well hidden from our family, as all teenagers do.

It turned out Ben wasn’t just my kind, annoying older brother. According to Dom, he was funny, really funny. He was daring and fearless. He was clearly more mixed up than we knew, dabbling in marijuana before trying a couple of heavier drugs. He wasn’t nearly as well-behaved as my parents or siblings presumed. Turns out, I’m just like him.

It was fascinating for me to hear, and I drank in Dom’s stories greedily, always wanting more, relishing in how much closer they brought me to my brother.

Dominic was the only connection I had to the real, true Ben. I don’t think he ever realised that when he left for Uni, he took Ben with him.

As soon as I heard Dominic was back, I hunted him mercilessly. Eventually, finding his wife on Facebook. The wife, and the three undeniably, beautiful children, sat beaming from my laptop. It all looked pretty perfect, but I knew it wasn’t after catching him with that blonde woman. Maybe she was just a distraction, nothing serious, but a clear sign that he wasn’t averse to having his head turned. What could be sweeter than finding your first love again?

What I hadn’t anticipated was the regularity of his hook ups with the blonde. This was no meaningless fling; it was a full-blown love affair. They stayed at the Huxley every Thursday. The bastard had an actual, proper mistress.

I burned with jealousy and felt the rejection all over again, despite the years that had passed. Dominic had hurt me a billion times, and most friends and family had warned me to stay away from him, but still, I longed to have him back…to have the ending we should have always had.

Up until now, I had kept myself out of sight whilst following him around, quietly seething before I could stand it no longer. I had to make my move.

I felt wild with jealousy. Imagined them swimming together in the clear tank in the centre of their suite, my suite. Tonight, we were all due at the Huxley again, and it was surely only a matter of time before Dom, and I ran into each other one of these weeks. Hopefully, his wife would see me arriving again… if she was still following him. She would have to kick him out sooner or later.

When Teddy cancelled, I was already at the hotel.
